Adding your website to directories is a very effective way for others to find you on the internet. Places like dmoz.org will allow you to add your website to their directory without charge. Although it takes several months to be added after you submit your site, it is a fairly useful tool. Many search engines and other websites use DMOZ as their directory service.

In order to find these directories, you can access google or yahoo and search your keyword followed by directory (ex. web hosting directory, jewelry directory, etc.) Some directories charge you for adding your url, while others are free or would like you to provide a reciprocal link. A reciprocal link means that these websites would like you to return the favor by adding their link to your website.
